What is a Sports Massage?

Sports massage is not just for the sports person. Patients include those from all walks of life, including desk-based workers, trades people and the retired.

Sports massage tends to be a deeper massage and focusing specifically on the management, manipulation, and rehabilitation of soft tissues within the body, including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is based on various elements of Swedish massage and may often incorporates a combination of other techniques involving stretching, compression, friction, toning, and trigger point response techniques similar to Acupressure and Shiatsu.

The purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which can build up in the body’s soft tissues.

At the start of your first appointment, a detailed case history will be taken. This allows the practitioner to gain a greater understanding of any current or past symptoms you may have and to make sure you are suitable for treatment. The amount of pressure used in the sports massage can be adapted to your choice. 

After your massage you will be advised of any areas of the body that need stretching or strengthening and be given any home care advice that may be suitable for you.
